Abdominoplasty Improves Lower Back Pain & Urinary Incontinence

Just published in March edition of the Journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The authors studied the incidence of low back pain and urinary incontinence in the postpartum population presenting for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and the extent of improvement following the operation. This was a prospective study of 214 patients using validated questionnaires. In all procedures, tightening of the rectus muscles was performed. Regardless of the technique used, statistically significant improvement was noted at 6 weeks and 6 months after the operation. Their conclusion was “Abdominoplasty with rectus repair creates a significant improvement in the functional symptoms of low back pain and urinary incontinence.”
